Gilderhus Reading

This reading was very informative in helping to understand exactly how history as a study has evolved over time. It is interesting how Gilderhus talks about different people in different time periods and how they all connect to each other. He talks about how the redefined wisdom of the Greeks and Romans inspired the Italians during the Renaissance. He also discusses how the “march of history produced changing levels of consciousness in human beings” (45). Gilderhus also talks about Leopold Von Ranke. “Ranke’s body of work staggers the imagination…he aspired to achieve balance and objectivity” (47). This article was very interesting and provided a lot of informative information about how historians do their jobs and what it means to be a historian.
